What kind of walls are we trying to break here and what does Shamanism have to do with it?

Created on 09/20/2009

I am talking about feelings and concepts.  We don’t have to choose one over another, and yet we often do just that. We do that thanks to the conditioning of modern civilization. At some point, a gap was created between feeling and “critical thinking”, and even though it produced all things abstract and useful, it is also responsible for the modern pattern of experience that often causes suffering, personally and collectively, by fostering our separation from the way we feel. As we grow and learn in an established paradigm, we gradually suppress our direct sensual experience and eventually exclude it altogether from planning and decision-making, substituting it with ideas, concepts and values provided to us by others. This would be fine, as it has been for a while, if the predicament were still functional. But it is not any more. Our relationship with our feelings and our relationship with our thinking (and yes we do have relationships with both) are dysfunctional for most. Feelings are ignored, feared, and repressed, while concepts (basically infused into our minds as “values” by external invasion) are running amok and making us codependent on them.

When we cut off part of the totality of our experience in order to please another part (as kids often do in relation to parents), we are bound to suffer, one way or another. I am absolutely certain of it. Why? Simple: I’ve been there and done that.

So what is the solution? Certainly not in switching roles and suppressing conceptual thinking and letting feelings have their ride – it probably wouldn’t create much good for one to certainly abandon thinking and follow sensual impulses blindly. The solution is in overcoming an either-or, black-and-white dichotomy of experience and learning to integrate all parts of the experience into new feeling-states.

And I believe that Shamanism can be particularly helpful in “breaking the walls” of our involuntary mental confinement.

Shamanism, as practiced in tribes, is not a more advanced system compared to our framework. It is not less advanced either. It is a representation of another type of experience. The reason why I write about Shamanism is because I believe there is a huge potential for us to learn from it and find ways to integrate their experiential knowledge with our conceptual thinking. Just like Carlos Castaneda did. We can integrate our Western capacity for conceptual thinking with ancient traditions of organizing feelings. This is what I think Shamanism does – it organizes feelings.  How exactly does it do it? Through images, symbols and metaphors.

That is why I personally prefer to have a relationship with Mnemosyne, for example, to entrust her to help me sort out my problems when I need to rather than sticking to some “value” or mental concept that was injected into me by one system or another. Because my relationship with Mnemosyne is alive and dynamic and She is after all the Creator of thought forms and the Guardian of concepts who gave names to everything. I just think I make better choices this way, because it enables me to experience more liberty and happiness as I go through life.

I can almost hear some of your objections at this point: “And what about values, responsibilities, morals?”

What about them? They are not Gods, they are just ideas, most of the time somebody else’s ideas.  But if we examine them with our innermost feelings and retain only those that are congruent to our sense of self (meaning that they feel right to our core), then they can become our personal Gods and Guardians and Guides, in a healthy and happy way. Easier said than done. You bet. It took me sixteen years to come full circle and to finally realize this liberty in myself through much pain, doubt, confusion, and denial. But it was all worth it. Because the sense of liberty that we get when we “break the walls” of mental indoctrination brings so much happiness and feels so right that my only hope is that there are ways to help other people make the same steps a little faster and with less pain, because the more happiness we experience here the more it will grow for everyone.

Love,

Olga

Dear Olga,
Thank you for this article. I think you want to warn us, not to live the live that is showing us ....from other people. That we dicided to live our own live, we take responsibility when we chose something...when feelings and thinking is te same… I Think, when this happens we do that what we have to do and that means happiness.
It helps me looking at my own live, thank you!
Lots of greetings, Malissa

I had not heard of the name Mnemosyne so
I just looked it up on Wikepedia and there
is a picture. An interpretation by my
favourite artist ,the Pre-Raphaelite,
Dante Gabriel Rossetti.Funnily enough I
was at a stately home just last weekend
looking at some of Rossetti’s works.

Dear Olga thankyou for this latest post....l have met many shamans over the years and they have definetley extended thier own congruence as to inner experiencing...my perception of this has been thier own inner authority, being in a place of governing, discerning and discrimnating what is useful and what is not! I do have an intuition of what your sharing. For myself it is based on removing myself from mindsets that are fixed. This maybe either in work, relationships or generally going about my daily life. Principles over personalities springs to mind! Lol Mags xx

Hmmm, it seems that every civilization has created paradigms to help humankind understand and survive their existence. It may be safe to say that some belief systems may have discovered elements of the truth in their teachings, and that some belief systems may have corrupted the truth, and that some may have a mix, and some may be far from practicing truth, or anything harmonious.

Does any one system have the true path to enlightenment, or is the truth to be found in a comparison of systems of belief to find the unifying threads? This is an important question, especially when taken to heart the idea that we are here to define our reality and create our destiny. The five questions to ask when making a decision come to mind. The five questions to ask when making decisions does strike chords of truth in me for some reason...is it because they are rooted in the truth, or is it because of some other reason my mind wishes to think these as being rooted in the truth?

Can we alter our reality, of course we can, but where is the line drawn between what is real/truthful and what is not; again the dualities rear their head. How do we pierce the veil to arrive into a state of full consciousness that is in align with universal spiritual truths, that reign light and harmony into our lives?

Could truth be a dynamic, sort of like good and evil could be put on one spectrum that is in flux? Is truth a spectrum, where doing things spiritually disaccordant, drives us into spiritual accordance, lest we get stuck repeating lessons.

Could it be true that in some way like where there is fear, love cannot be, that where there is evil, good cannot be? Could it be the mind wants to put these attributes on a “spectrum of truth” where at one end of the polarity there is good/truth/love and at the other end of the polarity evil/lies/ and fear reside? Does the human mind do this in order to not accept evil in and of itself alone when practiced, in order to opiate the logic of facing one’s own demons, by coming up with a rationale that says that through recognizing the evil that is done, the mind draws near to start practicing good??? Do we need to shift our state of being to an altered shamanic state, to help us in this endeavor to practice good, in order to be aligned in our actions with spiritual truths that are harmonious?

I am not so convinced at this point in my life that we can always trust that our feelings, or altering our states of mind will drive us to do that which is good for us, or lead us into the objective truth or who we are. Our feelings are the by products of our senses, and our senses do have a protective function, but they can also lead us astray...and are at the foundation of many of our motives. If our emotions, and emotives are dictated by being ensnared by our senses in the base extremes, then they may lead us into painful lessons. I am not defining these as good or bad, as they are part of our existence, and can also lead us toward seeking to distance ourselves from the actions that led us into painful experiences, so one could make sense of these experiences by learning from them. Yet, the old cliche comes to mind, does one need to get burned to know not to put themselves in the fire? Not to mention, unfortunately, many fail to learn from their experiences, and repeat actions that lead them into chaos.

I tend to think, that many do not think logically and fail to be taught how to think, and as a result by their own free nature stumble into the outcomes of the realities they create that are not harmonious to what they truly want in their lives.

I think, that is where the wisdom of the ancients, or the elders in the many different cultures can help serve as our guides, and give us the tools we need to be able to direct our intentions wisely.

There are spiritual truths, that are sometimes difficult to accept because our feelings get in the way, but if we logically apply these principles and trust in them, they can often lead us into realms of bliss...where harmony in our lives dominates, but this can take patience.

Sometimes, I believe we must do what we know is right, even if our feelings don’t agree. To come to this conclusion took me a long time. I used to say, how could my feelings be wrong, they are my feelings, yet I now see in retrospect in some situations, I should have not allowed my feelings, and my ego to defend them lead the way.

That raises another issue, and that is when do you trust your “intuition/feelings”...and when do you just apply logic, and over ride your gut instincts...maybe it is back to the five questions....is truth to be found in your decisions and actions, or is the truth found in the great spiritual doctrines which would take an acceptance of certain elements of these dogmas?

The mysteries of truth....where may they be found? Are they solely in the discoveries of our experiences, and shared experiences...and is truth black and white or is it not? Is truth white light diffracting into seven colors, where in the absence of colors is darkness void of truth.

How do we walk in the light of truth, and strive to keep the consciousness to do so burning in the desire of our being, keeping out the shadows of the walls that self imposition, and that which is often externally imposed upon us bring? Yes, we can use archetypes to help create a medium upon which to build a framework to personify in our daily lives, yet my trepidation is to be mindful to walk in spiritual truths that bring harmony.

On a lighter note, I am like Artemis, Athena, and Aphrodite at times, but please don’t make a Hera out of me Yes, I see parts of their personalities that I can identify with, but ultimitely I am me, and what that is, I am still discovering.

To seek truth, is to seek not only that which brings light, but to also come to know what to avoid that can potentially create unharmonious conditions in my life.

All my love,
Maresha
